If you compare Newsvine with Digg, you see alot of things that look similar(as far as features). However, Newsvine has alot of what Digg needs. Do you think Digg will lose popularity as a result of this? Or do you think Digg will just not grow as fast? The internet is still growing very fast in popularity, so we need something like Newsvine. Unless Digg makes some drastic changes soon, then comparing Digg with Newsvine may soon be like comparing Microsoft with Apple. Feel free to chat about this or leave a comment with your opinion.

Interesting point, but I think it really depends on Newsvine's focus of content. Digg, to over simplify, is more of a social-techie site. If you listen to Alex and Kevin's podcast, they constantly joke about the lack of female readers/participants. I do believe Newsvine is broader in focus (at least for the moment). Enevitably, it is the actual readers and content contributers that will define which way both sites will go. And besides, there's plenty of room in 2.0 for both of them.

#1 - Fri Jan 6, 2006 6:32 PM ESTI don't think Newsvine will be focused enough on technology to hurt either Digg or Slashdot. Since Newsvine seems to be more focused on mainstream news, I think the main site that it will draw users away from is Google News.
But I could be wrong. And you're absolutely right with the fact that Newsvine has alot of features that Digg needs... which makes Newsvine a technically superior product. And even if it is comparable to Microsoft vs. Apple... it still doesn't stop 90% of people from using Microsoft.

I think newsvine's opportunity is getting "regular" people to take advantage of a social/interactive atmosphere with more popular subjects.

While certain topics are more amenable to popular appeal (e.g., world news, etc.), others are just the opposite (Sports, Local News and, yes, Tech). If I like to parse tech stories, why would I chose this over Digg? Digg has that community captive -- why would they migrate here? Because they also want to read sports stories? They'll just go to ESPN.
What this site can do is agglomerate the best links for people who are more "dilletante-esque." (That is definitely not a word). You know, the dude who wants to read the topic political stories, the top sports story, etc.
But it isn't going to replace Digg.

Most other Web 2.0 apps do focus on the geeky, obscure, socio-techno crowd. In the end, it's naval-gazing. However, Newsvine breaks the bubble (thus far) to provide news that is relevant outside of the technologies that fuel it.

#7 - Fri Jan 6, 2006 8:27 PM ESTI think newsvine needs to have a combination between the type of content that slashdot and digg provides in order to be a good digg+slashdot killer.
You see how slashdot is more like "News for nerds" and digg is more like "CSS Tips and tricks!" kinda stuff,
a combination between the 2 types of content would be perfect.
I know newsvine doesnt focus mainly on tech, but what they do focus on is 'mainly everything'. Tech, science, health, etc. Tech needs to be just as important as any other category of course. But it also deserves alot of attention and perfection. I personally don't see anything wrong with working on perfecting the quality of the content that is in the tech section.. Newsvine needs to go all out in every section.
Entertainment should have a games sub-category. The games subcategory should have ALL game news for example.
Not just outdated news from a while back. Up to date news on games including pictures and things. This way, people dont need to have to go to gamespot.com or whatever site for their game news. They'd just be able to simply use rss to tie to that section of newsvine.. Or whatever other section on newsvine that appeals to them. As long as they know theyre getting good quality content thats up to date and appeals to a wider audience.

Newsvine wants to focus on whatever Newsvine users want to focus on. So far, we have been building features that benefit all categories across the board. There is still quite a bit of this to do, but once the heavy lifting is all done, we're going to get deep into enriching and adding features to each main category. How much content you find there and how its categorized is really up to you. You guys can turn the tech section into a Slashdot clone if you want, or make it a little more Digg-like. How it turns out will be a result your usage in conjunction with the feedback loop. We want to empower you guys to make areas of Newsvine as specific you wish, without infringing on or excluding others who have dissimilar interests.

I was just saying, that in my own opinion, I think if newsvine provided sort of a combination between digg-related content and slashdot-related content, then newsvine would attract people from both of those websites. And I understand that newsvine doesn't want to focus all their attention on one particular section, but I see nothing wrong with adding in an extra bit of attention as far as the quality of content to attract more users.
This post isn't just about that though, but also if digg will soon suffer from newsvine, and how bad would it suffer.

Scooop looks and feels like a small panel rather then a news site. As much as it tries to be clean and simple,
it just might be too clean and simple. The middle is a bit too small on width, and I'm not too big on the style of it overall.

I work for the company that owns that site. ;) We are currently trying to improve the site as a whole. I do appreciate your feedback though. A buddy of mine just introduced me to newsvine two days ago and NewsVine is getting reviews from all of my peers. In comparison what is it about NewsVine that you like/Dislike?
#16 - Sat Jan 7, 2006 6:25 PM ESTWell I think there is plenty of room for improvement. I sent in a bunch of suggestions on newsvine. But there is nothing on newsvine that has really bothered me. It's in beta and its already a monster. I think both scooop and newsvine needs to use ajax a whole lot more though.
Just even with sendingreceiving data in the most simple parts.
i.e., when I made a comment, it shouldn't have to reload the page. lol
But I think suggestions can always come after bugs and things have been fixed.
Anyways, on scooop, the graphics are too much for the simple simple css design thats there. The graphics either need to be a little bit more simple, or there needs to be more graphics, and the css needs to be tweaked a tiny bit. I noticed how the gfx on scooop have glossy buttons. I think they are a little too glossy.
And the left menu on http://www.scooop.net/tstories.php?id=1 , the glossyness on the background bar's
(http://www.scooop.net/theme/orange/bg_button.gif) may as well be a bit more glossy to match the gfx.

Kind of reminds me of Threadwatch but the stupid Comment Preview at the bottom of the screen makes me nuts, I need a way to turn that off or I'm going to scream.
